Trust . Join . Grow . Serve . Reach
Welcome to the First Baptist Church of Sylacauga, Alabama—where our mission is the Great Commission. Since 1833, we have been sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ in and around the Marble City. On this website, you can discover much more about our church family. You'll even find some outstanding video resources to answer your questions, strengthen your faith and help you grow closer to Jesus. Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, we would love to walk beside you. We don't have all the answers, but we know the One who does. On Sunday morning, Bible Study begins at 9:40 with Worship at 11. I'm Pastor Rick Patrick, and Lord willing, I'll see you on Sunday!
Some men will be in coats and ties. Others might be in khakis and a nice shirt. Some women will be in dresses. Others might wear a skirt or slacks and a blouse. Children dress much less formally. You might see someone wearing jeans and a t-shirt. While we seek to honor the Lord as we present ourselves before Him in worship, we do not believe that church is a fashion show. Wearing your "Sunday best" means different things to different people. What matters most is not our clothing on the outside but our attitude on the inside.
Both in Sunday School and in worship, Bible passages will be read and discussed. While the passages are often printed in the literature or projected onto the screen, it is still helpful to be able to be able to reference various verses. Most people either carry a Bible with them or utilize a Bible application on an electronic device. It helps to follow along with lessons and sermons and can encourage further study later on.
An ample number of clearly marked parking spaces are available in our north, south and east parking areas. Persons with disabilities will find many spaces close to the building designated especially for them.
In lieu of an offering, we encourage our first time guests simply to complete a Guest Card in the worship service and drop it in the offering plate. We want to register your visit with us and share with you some information about our ministries. Whenever church members begin supporting us financially, we provide offering envelopes, with which people contribute either weekly, biweekly or monthly. Some members donate during Sunday School, while others contribute in the worship service. As a convenience for our members, we also provide the option of electronic giving.
People often ask, "How do I join First Baptist Church?" It's really very simple. At the close of our worship service, we sing an "Invitation Hymn." This means everyone is invited to walk forward down the aisle during the singing of this hymn to shake the Pastor's hand and express some type of spiritual decision God has laid on their heart—to become a Christian, to join the church, to be baptized, to recommit their life, to pray at the altar or to share some other decision. One of our ministers will counsel with you about your decision. When it is time to present you to the church, the Pastor will do so and the church will vote you into the membership.
Sometimes we hear the question, "What if I want more information about the church BEFORE I commit to joining?" This is completely understandable. It is an important decision, and you deserve to find out all you need to know about our beliefs, history, values, purpose and ministries BEFORE you make such a commitment. Therefore, we offer a First Discovery class designed to answer all your questions about our church family. In fact, if you have any other questions about our church, we invite you simply to call us in the church office at 256-245-6301.
